Runs in the family

We see it all the time. If one kid has a yooneek name, chances are, the sibs (or sometimes parents) will also be similarly endowed. To wit:

Ashela, daughter of backwards Alesha
Bryanna (daughter of Bryan)
Dajel, daughter of Falon
Eden Rose, Aria and Poppy Grace
Jazmyne and Brayton
Kirsi Lane (named after her father Lane)
RyAnne (daughter of Ryan)
Ryleen, daughter of Ryan and Nicholeen)
Seville Liberty and Savian Dominic
Shenae and Kurtis
Takanna (daughter of Shasta)
Tayler (named after her father Tayler - that won't be at all confusing)
Thadeus (son of Storm)
Tyanna (daughter of Shylah)

Boy or girl?

We've recently been skimming some newspaper archives to bring you the best in groan-worthy names. Let's start with some boys and girls who will be very confused...

Brier (boy)
Campbell Susan (girl)
Emerald (boy)
Jayna Michael (not sure)
Johnnye (girl)
Ryan-Kate (not sure)
Tristan Saraphine (boy)
Vanna (boy)

Bushfires and suds

Emerald Lee and Byron Leigh Sincere thanks and appreciation to the EMERALD CFA for saving our house in the bushfires.
Well, we know now why the child has an unusual name – she’s named after the local fire brigade. That still doesn’t explain why she and her older brother have the same middle name with different spellings...

Luxe Avalon and Jazz . Soap and perfume – do we sense some personal hygiene issues here?

Kenadee and Tayte John-Thomas

Family ties

You know, we often see naming trends in families. There's the always popular 'same initial', like Heidi, Holli, Hans, and Hillari.

Zavier Francis, Zennor Carson, and Zealand Chance (triplets)
Aaliyah and Aashaunti (twins)
Cyle and Cadin (twins)
Durlene (daughter of Durwood), mother to Darla (mother to Dagny, Curran, and Camden) and Daven (father to Dyre)

There's the children named (directly or indirectly) after their parents:
Ronnie (daughter of Ronald)
Javyd (son of Davyd and Janitza)
Jerin (son of Jeremy and Erin)
Kallan (son of Allan and Katherine)
Aage (son of Aaron)
River (son of Brook)

And then there's the themed names:

Faythe and Grayce
Kali-Shay and Aaron-Jay (rhymes are just so much fun)
Shayden and Shaina

There's a reason dictionaries were invented

It was so that recognised (and recognisable) spellings of words could be established, to make life easier for printers and readers alike. And that's also why there are standardised spellings of many given names. Here's a sample from parents who wanted to stick two fingers up at the establishment.
